Using the last weapon in it’s arsenal it does provide a couple jump scares and a slight twist at the end.įollowing a young woman, Angela Holmes ( Olivia Taylor Dudley ) who starts to drink a fuck ton of water and experience a few bizarre moments, her overprotective father Roger Holmes ( Dougray Scott ) and useless lover Pete ( John Patrick Amedori ) have seen enough (and strangely missed tons) and sign her into an institution believing her to be insane, until evidence shows that priest might be more help than a doctor.
I’m not sure why I had such high hopes for this film, the posters were quite dramatic and I guess it was a vain hope that this would be a dark insight into the secret world of the vatican’s archives and their documentation of some batshitcrazy exorcisms but then I remembered that this is Hollywood and therefore I was more likely to see all of the Exorcism Movie Sins instead.Įverything about this movie is typical, it makes all of the usual mistakes and doesn’t break any new ground into the world of possession/exorcism movies, but it doesn’t mean that it’s absolutely terrible, just that the predictability makes it less scary. You can now watch ‘The Vatican Tapes’ on both VOD and DVD.Starring : Dougray Scott,Olivia Taylor Dudley, Michael Peña, Djimon Hounsou USA.
My verdict? ‘The Vatican Tapes’ is worth watching, but don’t expect a lot. I got the impression that they were setting it up for a sequel, which is a strong possibility with the the way the movie ended. I feel they should have spent longer focusing on the exorcism itself. My major complaint is that they took forever building up to the climax. The other characters were nicely played as well, however Pena’s character lacked emotion. The shift between Angela possessed and those few moments when her character returns to consciousness was seamless, but at the same time, it was clear which version of Angela was present. The film does not rely on a lot of special effects and that works out well. Lately we’ve seen a lot of possession films released, ‘The Vatican Tapes’ did not stand out. I’ll stop with the story-line here, I would hate to ruin the ending. Angela is not like your run of the mill possessed character. This is where the film departs from your average possession film. After the priest contacts the Vatican, Cardinal Bruun is sent to handle the exorcism. Her sanity comes into question, but a priest (Pena) recognizes the signs of possession.
Her father is forced to make the decision to remove her from life support, she dies, only to come back after a few minutes. Over the next few days she becomes sick and is carried to the hospital, where she falls into a coma. She moves in to take a look at the bird, which then bites her. After getting stitches she and her boyfriend Pete (Amedori) are riding on a bus when a crow crashes through the window.
In ‘The Vatican Tapes’ Angela (Dudley), a young woman, is celebrating her birthday when she cuts her finger badly, while cutting her cake. The film from Lionsgate was directed by Mark Neveldine and stars Olivia Taylor Dudley, Michael Pena, Dougray Scott, John Patrick Amedori, Djimon Hounsou and Peter Andersson. Last night I finally go to see it via VOD. I’ve been looking forward to seeing ‘The Vatican Tapes’ for a while now.
